Ipod 80gb classic not working
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:25:45 PM »
When I try to use the utility for complete or minimal install, it get the error "Error reading partition table - possibly not an Ipod" on quickstart

Moving to the instillation tab, bootloader gets the same error

When going to install rockbox  though, it does go through.

Trying the bootloader again afterward, same error.

Uninstalling rockbox (w/o bootloader) and trying manual install, i get the same error when running the ipatcher.exe of possibly not an Ipod.  no clue what to do at this point.

That means your ipod doesn't have the expected partition layout.  This usually happens for two reasons:

1)  You've mangled the partitions on your ipod and the installer can't figure out where to put the bootloader.  In this case restoring with iTunes is usually enough to fix the problem.

2)  You don't actually have a supported ipod, so you can't install rockbox at all.

You didn't mention which ipod model you had.  Is it one listed on www.rockbox.org?

I assumed it was a supported version, as it said 5th gen 60/80 on the drive list (I have the 80).  Does apple have another 80 gig that isn't 5th gen that I don't know about?  I just got this thing yesterday (restored to factory settings before shipped to me).  Checking online there is also a 6th gen 80 gig and a 5.5 it seems 80 gig.  How can I tell which I have?

Bleh, was hoping this would be the solution.  Actually was going to resell this because the interface sucks so badly and get another mp3 player in its place.  Looks like I may still have to.

Yes, there are several ipods different ipods that have been made in that capacity.  Not all are supported.  Go on google, wikipedia or the apple website and figure out which one you have.

The 5.5G was discontinued several years ago, so if you just got it from Apple its probably unsupported.

Alright, thanks anyways.  I'm going to resell this and buy something with a more friendly interface xD

What version of Rockbox Utility are you using, and on which platform? There is a problem with the current release on Windows. If you're on Windows, please try ipodpatcher.

The newest one and on windows, but yea, double checked last, it's a 6th gen ipod, so that's more likely the problem than anything else.  As for the patcher, tried that one last night (that's manual install right?)

If you have a sixth gen then Rockbox does not support it, and no install method will work.
