tome: Thank you for taking the time to post a solution.  This is what happens...battery drains . As soon as I connect the charger a low battery...charging message and icon appears. A couple of minutes later the apple logo appears for seconds , and the the black screen with the rockbox message appears. I have tried to set the ipod to disk mode in the short span of time from the apple logo to the black screen. I'll try now your way and see what happens. I'll let you know
