I NEED HELP
« on: February 11, 2010, 12:48:26 PM »
Hi! I am new with this. I liked the idea of listening to flac music in my Ipod Video 80GB so I tried to install Rockbox . Automatic install didn't do it for me , so I tried manual . I messed up . All I can see are small white letters over a black screen  and the drive is spinning all the time , until it runs out of power . Tried to put the Ipod i disk mode with no luck  for about 60 times now . Also have pressed the menu /centes combination . When it runs out of power , if connected to the computer , will show the too low battery notification until it reaches a certain point , and will come with the above mentiones black screen with the white letters (it is some sort of menu , with the last two instructions saying to press menu/select  or select /play (for disk mode ) please ... help me if you can
Best regards

Menu + Select is the hard reset, if I'm not mistaken, and holding Select + Play while booting connected to a computer should put your iPod in disk mode (you should hold this combination down until the disk mode screen appears). According to the Apple website it's a good idea to make sure your iPod is fully charged when putting it in disk mode, though I'm not sure this is entirely necessary since I believe the iPod can be charged via USB while in disk mode.

I'm not entirely sure why you can't boot in disk mode, maybe someone that actually owns an iPod might have more information that I was able to find.

It would be probably much easier to diagnose if you include more information what you have done.

What do you mean with "Automatic installation didnt do it for me" ? was there any error message ? What didnt work ?

Also how did you do the manual installation ? Tell us exactly which steps you have done.

Also what do this small letters on black screen say ? Tell us exactly what it says. The text is there for a reason.

As karashata said, disc mode is select+play at boot, not select+menu.

Wild guess: you missed to install the rockbox zip, and only installed the bootloader. Do as the screen says and use select+menu to reboot, and select+play directly afterwards to get to discmode. Then install the main rockbox binary and all should be fine.

Also please use better Titles for you post, "NEED HELP" isnt very desciptive.

First of all thank you for your attention and collaboration  and I am sorry for not being sufficiently explicit in my title. I am feeling pretty bad , because I caused all this mess by maybe rushing into things. I did this: 1) Tried to use the auto installer ver 1.2.4  and received an error message that at this moment I can't recall , but I think it might have something to do with the windows installer because I keep it in "stop mode" due to to an annoying pop up that appears trying to install an old and already removed software everytime I right click on most anything. I found ver 1.07 somewhere and tried to follow the instructions, and changed the windows installer to enabled. The actual installer folder ver. 1.0.7 was sitting in my Ipod . I executed it from the Ipod and all seemed to work just fine. When I disconnected  the Ipod started to boot and always returns this real tiny(difficult to read at my age)   message ( The white letters on black background I was referring to in my previous message). I managed to get a nice loupe and this is what it reads. Still... fully charged or not pressing the menu/select does not change anything (many , many times...lost count) and of course, the other combination select /play ....well ...the same thing

can't load rockbox, Ipod:

Hold Menu + Select to reboot
Then Select+Play for disk mode

I am sorry to bother you people , but it is depressing to find that an otherwise reliable piece of equipment that I use a lot at the office and everywhere , turned into this thing all because I did not pay attention . I am just trying to find a way out of this.
Any help is strongly appreciated.

That definitely looks like you forgot to install the actual firmware files, but you did get the bootloader installed.

What you need to do is connect your iPod to the computer, press and hold Menu + Select (possibly for up to 30 seconds, until it reboots), then immediately after it reboots press and hold Select + Play until it goes into disk mode. Once it's in disk mode, you'll either need to download the Rockbox 3.5 release for the 80GB iPod, or the current build and unzip it into the root of your iPod's drive. Once it's been unzipped into the root of your player, you can disconnect the drive from your computer and it should automatically reboot and Rockbox should then load without any problems.

I'm not sure what you'll have to do if you can't at all get it to go into disk mode...

Thank you for your response. I tried once again as per your recommendation , but unfortunately , even pressing select/menu  for several minutes will not reboot the ipod . The drive sounds as constantly spinning.

It should reboot within 30 seconds as long as you press both buttons down together and hold them down without shifting your fingers around at all, it can be a little tricky to do... (I've only had one opportunity to do so myself, a friend's iPod had frozen and I happened to know how to reset it from reading various Rockbox forum threads, it rebooted within 10 seconds...) As far as I know that's a hardware reset so it should work as long as you're holding both buttons and not shifting your fingers around accidently...

If it's *still* not working, there might be something seriously wrong with your iPod that I at least can't help you with (as I don't personally own one).

No... Unfortunately ...even though I try hard ...no boot ...nor  disk mode at all! Drive ceases to spin after a while when power is totally down.

Hmm... Doing a little more research... Try toggling the hold switch on, then back off, then holding Menu + Select to power it off, I'm not sure it that will help but it's the only thing I can find that we haven't tried yet.

Assuming that doesn't work, I would let it drain completely until it powers itself down, then plug it in to a wall outlet or a USB port and let it fully recharge before trying to boot it into disk mode (holding Select + Play *immediately* after turning the iPod on until it goes into disk mode) while connected to your computer.

I hope that works, otherwise I would have to guess something is seriously wrong with your iPod.

I found ver 1.07 somewhere and tried to follow the instructions, and changed the windows installer to enabled.
Please don't use versions that are that outdated. A lot will be broken for various reasons (like things that changed on the download server).

Quote
can't load rockbox, Ipod:
File not found

You are missing the main build. Put it into disk mode by pressing (and holding) Menu + Select until the Ipod reboots (can easily take 30 seconds or so), and once the Ipod reboots (could be a bit hard to spot on a color LCD) press Play + Select. The Ipod will enter emergency disk mode. This will always work because its built-in into the Apple bootloader. Then connect the Ipod to the PC and install the main build. With Rockbox Utility, use Actions / Installation / Install Rockbox (or use the Install Rockbox butotn in the Installation tab, that's the same). Then install the current release or build (that's up to you). Reset the Ipod again by pressing and holding Menu + Select so it reboots. You should end up in Rockbox.

And please use a descriptive topic. "I need help" is not even close to descriptive, and please stop screaming topics. Thanks.

torne: Thanks a lot for your suggestion . Ipod is now back to normal state. It would not boot nor start disk mode with the key combinations but... sliding the hold button and plug in it in did the trick.
Thanks again to all of you...

1) Let the battery run down until it shuts itself off.
2) Turn on the hold switch
3) Plug the iPod into a power source

It should boot up into the original firmware (because the hold switch is on). Then you can install the Rockbox build.

The hard-reset combination (turn hold on then off, then hold menu+select for a very long time) really is implemented in hardware as far as we know so if that doesn't work then either you are doing it wrong or your hardware is broken, but the above may work anyway.
