Deleting letters in text editor

When typing a word is there a way to delete letters? I checked the manual (in text editing), and searched the forums and couldnt turn anything up. I know this is an extremely lame question, but I use the interactive fiction plugin a lot and it would be a great relief to be able to delete letters instead of cancelling the word and retyping it.
