Strange coincidence, Talon. I'm having the same problem today with an iPod Video 5g/30gb installing from Windows 7(x64). The autodetect crashes the utility, installation gives three "could not open ipod" errors, and manual install of the bootloader fails claiming no ipod was found and make sure it's connected and in disk mode---both of those things are already true. This is after restoring the iPod on another Windows computer.

get error CANT OPEN IPOD or just crush the RockboxUtility...
(but ipod is right autodetected - i can install new firmware or themes or something else but not bootloader :/ )

Autodetection works because you already have a Rockbox installation on the player. For bootloader installation direct access to the disk is necessary (i.e. by accessing the complete disk, not the filesystem via its assigned drive letter). For some reason opening the disk fails, and the system doesn't return an access denied error.

Do you have some kind of antivirus software running on your PC that might interfere?

You need lower level access then that. Try uninstalling whatever software blocks access or using a different PC.

I have ESET Nod32, but disabling it has not changed anything.

How do I know what program(s) is/are responsible for the blocked access? Will there be information about it in the log that I can create from the install error dialogue?

Just in case this helps, I looked at the Windows Event viewer and found this error, event ID 1000:

Faulting application name: RockboxUtility.exe, version: 1.3.1.0, time stamp: 0x50b22133

I think the only way to check is to remove each program and see if access is blocked.

Do you have Itunes installed? Itunes is known to interfere with bootloader installation.

Safe mode does seem to do the trick. If ESET was involved, it certainly gave no indication that it was blocking something from happening. Thanks for your help!

Safe Mode is not necessary.

The only real requirement is low level access to the device, which means you must either be the administrator of the machine, or have an account with elevated (administrative) privileges. The Rockbox manual for your device describes this clearly:

Quote
Administrator/Root rights.
Installing the bootloader portion of Rockbox requires you to have administrative (Windows) or root (Linux) rights. Consequently when doing either the automatic or manual bootloader install, please ensure that you are logged in with an administrator account or have root rights.

On Windows, assuming your account has administrative rights, it should be sufficient to simply right click on the Rockbox Utility binary and select Run As Administrator. If UAC (User Account Control) is active for the account, you will need to allow the instance of Rockbox Utility to run with administrative privilege.

Additionally, as bluebrother noted in a prior post, iTunes may interfere with the installation process. It isn't necessary to remove iTunes, but you may need to stop any Apple/iTunes related processes for the duration of the bootloader install. Only the bootloader requires low-level disc access, the Rockbox binary requires no special treatment for installation.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
