Cant copy files to Ipod 4G 20GB anymore
« on: February 05, 2010, 06:44:43 AM »
Hi,

I've got a problem with my Ipod 4G 20GB. I installed Rockbox on it in june 2008. With the version that was current at that time.

I havn't used the Ipod for a while, because at some point the Ipods Display died and I lost fun with it.
Since then, the display of my Ipod has died due to moisture on my Ipod ( a cause of heavy rain). But other than that my Ipod still seems to work. Now i've bought a car radio and use it as a external harddrive and connect it to my Car radios USB Port and play the mp3's stored on it.

That works pretty well.

But now I wanted to add more Mp3's on the Ipod, and the Ipod is recognized by Windows XP as a external USB device just fine and I can browse, move and rename files on the Ipod in windows explorer.

But if I try to copy new files onto the Ipod, the copy speed is very slow and at some point i get error copying. Not even 1 MB will be transfered to the Ipod. Anyone knows what the problem is?

It worked before with the current Setup without any issues.

I also tryed to add a voice file to the lang directory, so that I can edit rockbox settings without the display, because I want Rockbox to shutdown automatically when no USB device is connected, becouse othersie I loose battery power all the time. But I was unable to copy any file onto the Ipod.

Anyone knows how I can fix that?

I haven't tryed updating the firmware with itunes, couse I have no display anymore and I cant remeber, if it was possible to place mp3 files on the Ipod like on an USB stick, couse I installed Rockbox right after I bought the Ipod and used the original Firmware only acouple of times and was more comfortabel in having all my MP3 files in Folders the same way they are on my PC.

If I reset the Ipod, I'm afraid I might not be able to come back to Rockbox anymore couse I have no working display anymore.

Tricky situtaion this is. But hope someone has a solution. All I want right now is to be able to copy files to the Ipod via drag and drop or total commander.

You shouldn't need to use the display for either Restoring/Updating in iTunes or installing Rockbox.

Since your iPod mounts as an external drive but you have failure trying to transfer files to it you could try checking the file system for errors.  It may also be that the hard drive is failing.  If your display was working you could use Apple's diagnostic mode to run some tests.
