Wife charges Gigabeat F40 with wrong charger while husband is at work...
(1/1)
woodensoul:
...and smokes it. Does anyone know exactly what component(s) will be fried? I took it apart and saw the obviously smoked component which reads (on my other Gigabeat, the dead one is totally black) "LTQT" across the top and "e3" on the bottom right corner. This appears to be a step-down DC/DC converter. I requested some samples at linear.com and will give replacing this a try at work.
The hard drive still works and no other components are visibly burnt... is there any hope to save this one?
yapper:
I'd say it would be hard to predict the extent of the damage. Good luck.
Chronon:
I don't know many details of the power supply circuit on the Gigabeat, but I think there's a reasonable chance that the regulator (i.e. DC/DC converter) bore the brunt of the damage and failed without delivering harmful signals to the rest of the circuit. I am not sure whether or not fuses exist and need to be replaced.
