Problem installing Sansa Clip (v1)
(1/1)
Cyber Mike:
Like the subject line says... I've been having a problem installing rockbox on the sansa clip. (V1)
Hopefully someone can take a minute to help me out.
Here's "exactly" what I've done so far:
1) Downloaded the "rockbox" zip. folder and extracted it to the desktop.
(I then dragged and dropped it onto the clip)
2) Created a file called "rbinstall" on the desktop, and dropped the 3 files into it.
3) Haha, Reread the directions about 5 times over and over. I'm not exactly sure
what this step involves. (my thinking is that my computer isn't allowing me to run the exe file.)
So, if someone can help me with step 3 it'd be much appreciated.
I know beggers can't be choosers, but would it be possible if you were to help me.... please,
write the instructions like I was the biggest computer idiot to walk this planet!!!
Thanks for the help,
Michael

Cyber Mike,
OK, assuming your player is in "MSC Mode", you have downloaded and extracted a current Rockbox build to your player and you have the folder "rbinstall" on your desktop with the OF (original firmware) file you've downloaded, the bootloader, and mkamsboot.exe inside it here goes:
-Open the comand prompt either by pressing WinKey + R simultaneously or clicking Start and then Run
-Type in "cmd" (without the quotation marks) and then press 'Enter', this will open the command prompt.
-Navigate to the "rbinstall" folder by typing "cd Desktop\rbinstall" and pressing 'Enter'(again without the quotation marks)
-Now you'll need to execute mkamsboot by typing:
mkamsboot.exe 'OF filename.bin' 'Bootloader filename.bin' 'mypatchname.bin' (then press 'Enter')
*without single quotes
*include file extensions (ie. .EXE & .BIN)
*replace "OF filename" with the name of the original firmware in the rbinstall folder
*replace "bootloader filename" with the name of the bootloader in the rbinstall folder
*replace "mypatchname" with whatever you wish mkamsboots output to be called
-After successfully running mkamsboot copy the output file (in this case "mypatchname.bin" to the root of your player. (you can "right click" on it and choose "send to" and then choose the drive letter of your player)
-Now find the file you've just sent/copied to the player and rename it to whatever the original firmware file you have inside the rbinstall folder is called.
-"Safely Remove Hardware" or "Eject" the player
-Unplug the USB cable
I hope I have worded this in a way that you can understand.

Cyber Mike:
AWESOME REPLY ST!
I have to tell you I really appreciate your help. Very clear and well articulated.
At first, I didn't understand that I had to create another bin file.
But, the installation went off without a hitch!
My appologies for the late response, I got excited with the installation
Instead of thanking you for your time (Like I politely should have)
I ended up spending my time futzing around with the EQ's and what not.
Amazing interface Rockbox has.
Again, thank you so much ST.
Michael

Michael,
No problem, none at all.
I know how aggravating it can be to "just plain not be able to get your head around something..."
I also know the amazing feeling of relief that comes when everything finally falls into place.
I want to let you know how much I sincerely appreciate your thanks, it's pleasing to know I've helped someone install the truly great product that Rockbox is, and shed the burden of the severely limited original firmware.
Again, your thanks are graciously accepted.
