Killed my I-Pod? It doesn't boot anything

Hello Community,

I hope my English is good enough to make my problem understandable. I've got an I-Pod Video 30 GB and wanted to install Rockbox (Surprise! ) for playing .flac files. First I wanted to use the Rockbox Utilities, but something went wrong with the DL, so it doesn't start. So I choosed to install manually, I've read the manual and it didn't seem very complex. I did it, just like it is written in the manual I think.
But after I did it, I removed my Ipod and then nothing happened. I can hear the HDD boot, then there's a little "clack" sound, the apple logo disappears and it tries to boot again and again and again, I tried to boot the original Firmware with the hold button, but it doesn't help anything. Same thing happens, if I plug the Ipod to my computer. At the moment I have removed the cable from the battery to the HDD to stop the booting.
Is there any way to rescue my IPod? What was wrong?

Hold Select + Play to enter the Disk Mode that's stored in flash.  This should allow you to establish a USB connection to your PC. 

I'm not totally sure what is going on with the firmware partition.  Apparently it contains neither an unmodified Apple firmware, nor a properly installed Rockbox bootloader.  It is probably easiest to use iTunes to Update or Restore your player (feel free to backup any files before Restoring).  (Update might fix the firmware partition without erasing the data on the FAT32 partition.  After one of those operations you should be able to try installing Rockbox again.

Thanks for your answer. I found the disk mode only two hours before your posting and it solved the problem. At the moment the original firmware is installed, because Rockbox doesn't run properly. If I install Rockbox I can't start the original firmware, but its important for me for playing my AudioBook files (.m4b)

What exact procedure did you follow to install Rockbox manually? Booting the original firmware is very simple and should not cause problems...

After the disaster of the first try, I didn't try to install it manually anymore. The problem was the ipodpatcher.exe, it gave me an error and then I could only start Rockbox and if I tried to start the Original FW as described in the manual, it gave the same problem as described in the first post.
When I used the Utilities, it always claimed that my Ipod is D:\. So I told the programm, that it's N:\ but I still got a bug when Utilities tried to install the bootloader. So I dismounted my D:\ HDD (I'm using Truecrypt, so that wasn't a problem) and gave the Ipod D:\ through the control panel. After that the Utilities installed Rockbox perfectly without warning or error, so at the moment everything runs exactly the way it should and I can run both FWs.

Rockbox should play .m4b files just fine, provided they are not encumbered by DRM.
