freeze on "ROLO ... executing " how to exit

(1/2) > >>

I
i've a 2nd gen ipod nano so I've to update manually the firmware.

Once the firmware is updated I disconnect the nano and it ask me to chose to reboot or not.

If I answer yes, it (oviously) does a reboot and starts ROLO that does something related with the cache and than:

- few times it goes to the rockbox sw normally,
- many times freeze on "ROLO ... executing"

when this second case happens I wait some minutes and than I force a reboot.

After the reboot sometimes it works, sometimes I've a brick (that I've to restore with iTunes etc. etc.)

Is there a precise to do list to avoid to have a little brick?
I read the manual and searched the forum but I didn't find an answer

I'd like to say that this isn't a blame, is just to save time, I love rockbox after the first time I tried it,

 ;)

Chronon:
Can you explain what you mean by "sometimes I've a brick"?  Do you just mean that Rockbox is unable to boot?  It seems that the Rockbox bootloader (which isn't affected by a firmware upgrade) should still be able to boot the Apple firmware.

Your inability to boot Rockbox after forcing a hard reset seems to indicate a problem with the firmware binary rather than with RoLo (Rockbox Loader) itself.  Do you not encounter such problems if you shut down and boot the new firmware without using RoLo?

HI Chronon

for brick I mean that the nano is unusable, neither with rockbox or the original apple fw, because of the screen inviting me to restore the ipod with itunes.
If I right remember, before that happens, during the shutdown, there is a little battery icon with a triangle (like the danger signal).

the problem arise because it reboot itself once I answer yes to the question whether to reboot or not. So I haven't control afterwards and I have to do a forced reset to exit the ''rolo executing...''.

next time I'll answer no so I can shutdown normally and than reboot.

How can I boot without using ROLO?

AlexP:
Brick is generally taken to mean completely unfixable (without specialist equipment).  If it "just" needs restoring, then whilst inconvenient and something we want to fix, it isn't bricked.

ROLO or ROckbox LOader (IIRC) is what starts a new rockbox main binary from inside anotherone and is not the same as the bootloader which starts the main binary when starting your player.
It sounds to me like ROLO is simply crashing and that this crash prevents a clean shutdown which dirties the flash fs enough so that the apple bootloader wants to restore it this behaviour seems comon for nano2g crashes.

As a workaround, just answer no to the rolo question and reboot the player manually
