%?cM %?cl tags (VISUAL CLOCK)
« on: January 21, 2010, 04:14:39 PM »
Can someone (please  ;D) make a patch (or something) so that people (like me for example) would be able to use %?cM and %?cl tags (so that there would be some way to make clock use images...) It would look damn nice! And I don't think that this is hard to do (well it might be hard... i donno  ??? ).

I don't think something like that would be practical, given the exceedingly large number of images you'd need to have to have your clock be accurate. You'd probably exceed the image buffer for the WPS.

On the other hand, if you didn't use nearly so many images, your clock might not be accurate enough to really be useful...

Of course, this is assuming you're using an analog clock. If you're thinking to use a digital clock, I remember JDGordon doing something that would allow skin themers to use images in place of numbers (along with a few other characters, he really did make it work well for the clock) but I don't recall if it ever made it into SVN or if it was forever left a patch... and I don't know where to find the forum thread this had been discussed in, it was quite some time ago...

Maybe someone will have a little more information as to what happened to that..?

yeah, I did create a patch which would let you do this for digital clocks (and probably fake analoge if you were clever) but it never went in (or will ever go in)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Dude, 60 images (30x30 resolution monochrome bmps) would only use 7kb:D... and if someone just wants to use larger font to make nice looking digital clock (like those lcd like looking fonts) it would only consume like 2kb memory...INCLUDING CODE :D. I have already tried to make custom battery meters (from 00 to 99 percent using 17x17 digits in monochrome bmps) and they work like a charm!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the best thing is that they look far better that any other battery meters around... and they're big... so its easy to notice... so you don't need to waste your time searching or trying to guess "what tha f*** those 8x20 pixels of your battery status tells you". Same goes for a clock, IT REALLY IS PRACTICAL!!!

Gordon, if you had already made those patches can You be so kind and just put them to svn? PLEASE :D

2nded, I've been using one of my rockboxed players as an alarm clock and tried to make a suitable theme,  but having a huge font makes menu navigation nearly impossible. If this was committed, it would fix that problem :).

Sadly, as is often pointed out, Rockbox is not a democracy.

OK... (but still you're not Gordon) ^^ anyway... what's the point in having open to public forum then... what's the use of "feature ideas" if they never go in?

The point is for them to be discussed, the idea developed, and brought to the point where someone is prepared to implement it, not to vote on what is popular.

Just because your idea isn't being done doesn't mean ideas are not done.

popular :D?... Gosh, some guy just comes and tells you that Rockbox is not a democracy :D I don't see him discussing and telling what's wrong with the idea of having a possibility to visualize a clock...

This has been discussed before, and the reasons have been posted already. When JdGordon says it will never go in he doesn't mean "oh i don't feel like it, but if you ask really nice i might change my mind", he means "the developers discussed it before and the consensus was that it is not wanted". Pestering him is not going to change that :)

If you really want it, ask JdGordon for the patch, and put it in your own build.

oh well... can you then at least give me a link to where those reasons are posted?

And btw., I'm not pestering him ^^. No one simply gives me the reasons why this whole thing can't be accepted.

They're probably not 'posted' anywhere; developers generally discuss stuff on IRC :)

I don't think something like that would be practical, given the exceedingly large number of images you'd need to have to have your clock be accurate. You'd probably exceed the image buffer for the WPS.

The reason is posted right there at the top of the thread. Resources on these players are not infinite.
