Bricked Gigabeat S60 Needs to reflash ROM

I bricked my Gigabeat S60 when trying to install Rockbox. How do I reflash the ROM to get it running again?  :'(

Are you really sure you need to reflash the ROM? The Gigabeat loads the firmware from disk, and you should be able to recover when in recovery mode (when those "firmware restore required" message appears). At least I haven't managed to get my S30 into a state where I couldn't recover it using beastpatcher (beastpatcher does have sendfirm functionality since a while now). It might be a good idea to describe the exact state you're facing and how you got there.

When I tried installing Rockbox it went through the process where it reloaded twice and told me unplug and turn off the battery switch. When I turned it back on and tried starting it up nothing happens. No display and nothing seems to be happening.

Installing Rockbox should not make the player perform any flash procedure. Have you tried giving the player a long charge, or starting it with the charger connected? I've had such an issue once when I thought I turned the battery switch on but in fact it wasn't really on.

Yes I did both of things but no joy. I even tried removing the hard drive and powering it up but nothing happens.

Hmm, then I have no idea what's the problem or what to do about it. Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Sorry.

Hi,

I would try to go back to original firmware.  You did save a copy of it as mentioned in the RockBox installation section ?

If the player was working when you started....it should still be recoverable.

Did you do a full hardware reset/reformat ?

Hi,

The S60 seems, or rather mine seems to be REALLY sensitive to low battery power.

One thing to maybe try is...Plug power wart into power port...WITH battery switch OFF...and with the USB cable plugged into both PC and S60,  switch the battery back to ON...see if the unit will now go into bootloader mode...

That will make sure you have plenty of power when the unit begins to power up from battery switch off position....

Update on bricked Gigabeat S60. What I finally did was order and replace the mother board in S60. What I think happened was the boot rom got flashed with trash. So when the MX31L tried to  run the code in the boot rom it went nowhere. The S60 is now running the Toshiba software. What I want to do is order a 120GB drive and but the Rockbox software on it and then install it in the S60.

Hi,

How did you manage to get that darn little motherbaord out of the case ?  The couple times I messed with mine to try anf ix the FM Radio contacts, I could only get so far and then it wouldn't let me get the rest of it taken apart so I could get the motherboard out of the case....

Do tell !!

Here is a web site that tells you how to disassemble the gigabeat S60.

http://sites.google.com/site/istoba/gigabeatharddriveupgrade

At the bottom of that page there is a link to replace the LCD screen using pictures. If you click on the each picture you will get a zoom view.
