presume then if that level is set it will be set at that level, and volume will be fixed

also looking at getting some headphones with in-line volume!

You probably won't be able to drive headphones very well off the line out.  The impedance is wrong.

using iLuv headphones with in-line volume control
using the line out on my apple universal dock with the headphones in there and the sound is great

i have got a dock-line out connector (FiiO) and awaiting the fmale-fmale connector for it (FiiO is male dock-male line out) to plug headphones in

will report back when it arrives!

dr_hillmann:
right, used the eq precut set to -11.5db, this gives a good range of controllable volume from the inline dial, without the precut enabled, when the volume was wound right up, the sound wobbles between left and right, it possibly speaker distortion, but i think its more likely output error, or possibly the quality of the plugs ive used... either way, at sensible volume, there is no problem at all, and sq is good

Chronon:
Look into getting a headphone amplifier.  Line-out is not intended to drive a load.

saratoga:
If it drives the headphones fine, its probably not a real line out anyway.

Buschel:
Btw, with r24318 lowering the volume below -56 dB will also lower the line out level. The codec driver can be easily tweaked to control the lineout. If you can build the software, just take a look at the submitted change.
