e260 for dumbies
« on: January 08, 2010, 06:40:08 PM »
im new to this, and i like what youve done with everything. my only question/thought is everything appears to be written in geek. i mean nothing on this "OS" for the mp3 player is straightforward and easy. so i was wondering, i know you can make themes but..., is there any way to change the name of and possibly hide some of the main menu items (ie change database to music and hide recorder). the reason i ask is i bought this mp3 player for my girlfriend and it worked ok with the stock firmware on it. but she had trouble adding music. so i said ill trade ya and gave her my ipod (which i like because of the interfacing between itunes and it). so i gave that to her and started playing with this. first thing i did was i wanted to put an sdhc card in. so i did research and found rockbox. its worked great only that it is rather complicated and sometimes sluggish. so i though there might be a way to get rid of some of the features and make everything run a bit smoother

You need to edit the code then compile Rockbox to change menu items/disable features etc.

Removing things won't make it run any smoother though. Generally speaking it runs pretty smooth on the e200 with default settings, so if you're having performance issues it might be best if you describe exactly what's happening (including what screen) and what settings you've changed.

glenn3451,

Searching the forums *should* (by now at least) provide you with enough information regarding changes and exclusions within the current menu structure.

If not, just gimme a PM and I'll try to elaborate as best as I can.

Though it may not be as easy as you'd first think.

PS: Shouldn't this be in 'User Interface and Voice'?

Or 'Feature Ideas'? (although it's not exactly a new idea...)

It's basically just a request to dumb down the current menu structure.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

that sucks, but was what i was expecting.

as for the problems i've noticed (and maybe its just me) but there is a lag sometimes (sometimes as bad as 10 seconds or more) when i try to switch songs. the reason i figured its due to extra features is because when i switch themes to the most basic one it seems to run a bit faster. im not a programmer, but is there a way to make it so (since i seem to hit next too fast) that when the player buffers the next songs it only worries about artwork and the first 10 seconds. and if the song plays up to say 8 seconds the player automatically loads the rest of the song?

That is excessively long.  You didn't mention what player you have - which is it?

Also, try turning dircache on.
