Plug-in power in iHP-100? (H-100)
« on: February 13, 2010, 09:06:39 PM »
I've read these units have plug-in power. I have a Sony ECM-DS70P minijack condenser electret mic. Where do I plug it in the iRiver iHP-100 and what option do I have to use? I haven't been able to record from any microphone other than the internal one.

Plug it into the line in port, and then select external microphone for the source.

I am not sure the iHP-100 has plug power. The h120/h140 have it, but not the older ones

Ah, I see. That must be why I don't have any option called "External Microphone" in the sources list. I can only use the internal one, and if I select analog line-in with the external mic plugged there, it doesn't work either. The recording is completely silent (the line input still works with an actual analog line cable plugged to the output another audio device).

So it seems I can't use external mics with my iRiver (unless I use an external preamp, but that adds extra bulk).

Thanks for clearing that up.

no, the difference between external microphone and line-in is zero/none/nada. The original firmware offers these choices but in fact this only changes gain settings.

Rockbox offers the whole gain range (which is much more than the original firmware), and calls it line-in. The plug power is not switchable, it is either there or it is not.
