Active Noise Cancellation
« on: December 31, 2009, 07:14:56 PM »
Has anyone considered using the microphone input to generate a signal representative of environmental noise that could be used to cancel out noise in the audio signal to the heaphone jack? Is this even possible, or would it require too much processor power?

It's certainly possible - but I don't think it would be very effective.

We've had similar suggestions before for people asking whether or not it could make the volume of the player react to environmental conditions too - but we've normally said similar to what I'm going to say to you now:

1) The microphones built into DAPs generally aren't that great
2) Most people leave their DAPs in their pocket whilst their listening to it, and in this case the noise caused by fabric rubbing on the microphone would confuse any attempt at the signal processing this would require.

Nice idea - I just don't think it would work very well.

Its possible but the microphone has to be extremely close to your ears to work, and I doubt many people are going to be interested in clipping a mic to their head to use it.
