iPod booting into apple OS after disconnect
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:01:36 AM »
For some reason after I disconnect my iPod with the newest version of RockBox from my Windows computer it will sometimes boot into the original OS that came on it and ask what language I want, etc.  It also recreates the ipod_control, contacts, calendars, and notes folders which I have deleted many times.  Any idea why this is happening and how to prevent it?
Thanks

Do you occasionally plug in USB while the iPod is turned off and hold is turned on?

None of [St.]'s instructions or statements have anything to do with what problem you're describing, and is just a bunch of random instructions for doing something he's just guessing at randomly might help you.

The files you're seeing (ipod_control, etc) are created entirely by the original firmware, and will appear if the original firmware is booted whether or not iTunes was on your computer. The original firmware will boot if the hold switch is on or if you're holding Menu while the device boots up.

So basically when you say "exactly the same thing" you mean "something vaguely similar, but rather than find out if it really is the same thing or attempt to diagnose the problem, I'm going to list a whole bunch of instructions, some of which may not even be necessary, that might have solved the problem for me, or might have been something I did that coincided with the problem being resolved for other reasons?"

Seriously, don't give instructions until after you get details about the problem unless it's very plainly a known Rockbox issue. Then diagnose it, and find a specific solution. Do not offer shotgun approaches - for example in your case can some of the processes be left on automatic? Are you 100% sure it's necessary that all be disabled? Did the time it stopped also coincide with a Rockbox update (one of the primary reasons someone attaches the device to their PC) and possibly simply be the result of that? Etc, etc.

Diagnose, then offer solutions.

Ok so I think the post that said it is caused when hold is on when menu is push was helpful but the other posts seemed a bit irrelavent.

My computer does not have itunes installed and hasnt for a very long time.  i used to use winamp before i put rockbox on my ipod but now I just drag and drop the songs on since they dont have to be in a special naming scheme.

So my question is, is there a way that will keep it from ever putting the ipod_control and other folders back on and booting into its original OS or do I just have to live with that?

As long as you're careful and don't accidentally boot the original firmware, those will never come back. You just need to be careful not to have hold on when it boots up.
