Menu Overview/Structure - is this available anyplace?
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:00:29 PM »
I have just loaded up a Sansa e200 with Rockbox for my wife (who is a newbie).

First of all, thanks to all the contributors for a great product.

I am trying find a listing of the menu structure.   The manuals seem to have that as a "todo" item (at least the manuals that I have checked).  Is there anyplace that I could find a listing of the menu items.  Even one that is not completely up to date?

Thanks,

What do you mean? Like an explanation of what the differant menu items do on an e200? I could tell you that (I used to have an e250 until I broke it :( )

Not a description - I could use the manual for that.

Just a list of the menu items - sort of a hierarchical or tree type listing.  That way I could show my wife what menu items would be of interest to her and how to navigate to them.

Oh, I could make for the iPod, which is pretty much the same as the Sansa minus the FM Radio...

If you want to do that, that would be appreciated.  I am sure that others would find it useful if it is posted to the forum :)

You can also do it yourself.
You even don't need a real device for that.
Get the simulator, then you can build this tree to your liking.

Another advantage: The simulator is interactive, you don't need to write the menu tree down, you can show her how to navigate to the interesting menu items directly.

I realize that I can use the simulator or a rockboxed device to show her how to get around, or to see the menu structure and write it down myself.

However, it is very easy for a newbie to get lost in the menu structure (ie how do I get from here to there, or which menu item do I pick to get to something that is 3 levels down).  For this, a printout would be a very useful thing to have.  Sorta like a navigation map.  It is a valuable tool to have.  There is a placeholder in the manual for for a menu overview.  Since it did not make it into the manual, I was wondering if an overview (even an outdated one) is available anyplace.

Maybe it does not exist.

Thanks,

I don't really see how it's possible to get lost in the Rockbox menus - left always takes you back, and if you *hold* left, it takes you right back to the top level of the menus. Is this really so tough to understand? (Seriously, is it? If it is - how could that be improved?)

Personally, I think seeing the menu structure tree written down wouldn't be that helpful in this situation.

I've tried to do it myself, but once I got to the Playback Settings and it's myriad of sub-menu's (the Onplay context menu is fairly mammoth as well) I realised it was just as complicated looking at the tree this way (if not more so) than just letting trial and error and eventually experience teach me where everything is in the menu.

My girlfriend was a *complete* technophobe, and was initially daunted by the menu, now she's fluent with it.

It's really not *that* much more complicated than any other OS, it just has many additional features that make the menu appear overwhelming to users who are new to it.

A menu structure printout would be very helpful to users who rely on voice menus such as blind users or folks with broken lcd screens (like me). :-) Perhaps the Rockbox Utility could print one out based on the individual's player. I'm not sure if that's possible but it sure would be helpful.

I think an appendix of the manual would be a good place for this.  There is a patch on flyspray to generate an overview for each player for the manual, which I suspect is a little out of date now but would be a good starting point.

Perhaps the Rockbox Utility could print one out based on the individual's player.

Definitely not. While it could be done it's simply the completely wrong place -- the manual is the documentation, so a menu structure overview should be in the manual. Including this was planned long ago but nobody did it -- and given the fact that the menu changes sometimes (when features get added / changed) such an overview optimally should be generated from the sources.

Rockbox Utility is an installer, so putting documentation there is simply wrong. And for printing ... well, if it's HTML or PDF it's better to use an appropriate tool that's already available instead of reinventing it :)
