your findings were correct, as there isnt a version  of rockbox for the 5th gen. nano. This is mainly due to encryptions.

Also if you take a look at the main page it lists all of the supportd players. If its not there rockbox won't work for that device.

As the iPod Nano 2nd Gen is still classed as unsupported, I'd say the answer to this question would probably be:

Most likely, at no point in the immediately foreseeable future.

I believe the issue is encryption, but I may be wrong.
Up until fairly recently (a year perhaps?) the opinion on whether or not it was possible to port to the 2nd Gen Nano was very firmly in "not currently possible" territory, but something in the OFW's Notes made it possible for work to begin, it's only been available as "Unstable" for 6-7 months (approx).

The 3rd Gen Nano wasn't very popular at all, so I'd say that it's unlikely to see a build for this target.

I'm not sure what (if any) work exists regarding porting to the 4th Gen Nano, but I would say that it would probably be much more likely to see a build available for the 4th Gen any time soon than it would be for the 5th Gen purely based on availability if nothing else.

The 5th Gen would be in a whole new territory as I believe there are no current targets with a camera, let alone support for one.

What you should understand is that Apple (I assume) is quite aware of the fact that people have figured out the encryption of, and are installing Open Source firmware to the older versions of their portable DAP's....and we also need to assume that they probably aren't too happy about it either and would like to prevent this from happening...
So (from their point of view at least) it makes perfect sense for them to try to secure the OFW with some pretty nasty encryption and/or other security measures to try to prevent people from doing this in the future.

The VERY short answer to this is:

http://www.rockbox.org/ clearly lists:

-Stable Ports
-Unstable Ports
and
-Unusable Ports

-If your DAP doesn't appear in the first two categories then there is no build available for it.

-If your DAP doesn't appear in ANY of the categories (as in 3rd, 4th, 5th Gen Nano) then there is currently no work going on for this player at all.

This is my understanding at least.

Your understanding is correct. The encryption on the 2nd/3rd/4th gen Nano has been broken sufficiently that we could *in theory* port Rockbox, though nobody is currently doing so for the 3rd/4th gen. The encryption for the 5th gen is still unknown as far as I know. Apple are aware of the Notes exploit that was used to compromise the other ipods, and have fixed it in the latest firmware for some models, so the 5th gen probably doesn't have it either.

Thanks Torne,

I thought that was the case as I've been following Rockbox on iPod Nano for some time now...but I didn't want to say "this *definitely* is the case etc. etc."

I'm not sure there's much point in an effort to port to the 3rd Gen...it's the technical equivalent of inbreeding.

I'd love to see how bad Apples sales figures flopped after they dropped that little bomb on the market.

Where I am at least, it's almost impossible to find anyone who has one...and those who do either don't have it by choice or don't want it.

It was just wrong in so many ways, to me (compared to the others) it shouldn't of been badged as a Nano.

I'd like to see a port to the 4th Gen Nano eventually, and the 5th...but I can wait as
I have plenty of 1st and 2nd Gen Nano's and spares to last me until this happens (or if it doesn't).

heitorpb,

Assuming that your question has been answered (and it was, wasn't it?), can the thread be locked now....?

Not a gripe, just checking that you got what you needed from the thread, seems you have, no?

Just for the record, I have a 3rd gen Nano kicking around - so now you know *someone* owns one ;)
