Ipod Mini 2nd gen unresponsive
« on: December 13, 2009, 08:28:31 PM »
Hello all. I'm having a bit of an issue with my Ipod mini. A couple years ago I swapped my dead 4gb disc for an 8gb CF card. Worked well. Here are the sequence of events.

1. Ipod mini was nearly full of music from iTunes
2. Loaded rockbox using the install utility. Worked great, but I had minimal space available on my disk due to the iTunes stuff loaded.
3. I wanted to clear the current files on the unit, so I figured I would give it a complete wipe and used the 'format' function in windows explorer.
4. Ipod will not load the iTunes OS nor will it load Rockbox. The unit is undetected when plugged into USB. The screen shows the below message:

Rockbox boot loader
Version: 3.0
IPOD version: 0x0007000
CF 8GB
Partition 1: 0x0B 7704
Loading Rockbox...
Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to
reboot then SELECT+PLAY
for disk mode

I can get it to reboot, but I can't get it to go to disk mode. The unit is otherwise unresponsive. It will not turn off. I had to take apart the mini and disconnect the battery. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

UPDATE

It looks like i was able to solve the problem. I took my mini apart and removed the CF card. I put it in a card reader and did the quick format and the long format options through Windows Explorer (running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit). This did not solve the problem. I then put my CF card in a digital recorder (Fostex FR2LE) and formatted it using that devices format option. Then, when I put the card back in my iPod and plugged it in via USB, iTunes (and my computer) finally recognized it and allowed me to restore the unit.
