wasnt sure: new ipod nano
« on: December 05, 2009, 04:02:37 PM »
well i figured out that im getting a new black ipod nano for christmas. im fairly sure its the 16 gig but its also possible its the 8 gig

i wasnt sure if this is the right area to post or not. if not you have my apologies

http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/ is the new ipod ill be getting and i wanted to know if there is a compatible rockbox build to work with it.

if so has anyone tried it? is the camera supported? does the dual boot function properly? is automated installation possible or will i have to do it manually?

this is my first time owning an ipod but its not my first time dealing with one. so i know that i want to get rockbox up and running on it asap.

the most important things im concerned about are
1: will rockbox install on it?
2: does dual boot (being able to switch between the apple firmware and the rockbox firmware on the fly) function correctly?
3: will ipod accessories work with rockbox?

and i sincerely apologize i these questions have already been answered and i thank any responses i recieve

No, no, no, no.

no

no, because of 1.

3: will ipod accessories work with rockbox?
no, because of 1. and 2. Accessories work (to some extent) on the supported Ipods.

To quote the front page:

If your player is not listed above, it is not supported.
There is no Ipod Nano newer than the 2G listed, so that should be clear, shouldn't it?

considering the fact that ipod doesnt list which generation of nano they are selling, and the fact the picture you provide as an aid to know which it is looks similar to the new ipod. no it was not clear.

I did not provide any picture.

If you look close you'll notice that most Ipod models look pretty similar -- there are some variants, but among those the differences are minor. As for your case, the new Nano (5G) looks almost identical to the previous version (i.e. 4G) -- it has a camera added, but that's it for the differences that are easy to spot. Even the Nano 2G and 4G look rather similar (no idea what happened to the 3G as that's quite different).

Besides, the page linked by epithetless is also linked from the IpodFAQ wiki page.

From this I gather he means the tiny images next to the download links on the Current/Daily Builds page that act as an *incredibly vague* visual representation of your target DAP so you can pick it from the bunch a little easier...

And no, I'm not sticking up for him either...going by his methodology you could say:

"My crappy $2.50 eBay ChiPod *looks* like the picture.....can I install Rockbox on it?"

And besides.....

We've all missed the bigger picture here anyway, Santa's gonna be PISSED at him for snooping on his X-mas presents..... >:(

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
