Stream Video/Text To Mp3
« on: December 06, 2009, 08:52:24 PM »
Would It Be Posible To Play Video On Say A Ipod Or Sansa Connected To A Computer Though The Usb You Know Stream It
(use it as Secondary Monitor Specificly For Video/Text)
They Have Streamed Games Though The Usb On A Psp Before (keyboard Controls) (Pc Monitor Picture)

I Personaly Think This Could Work With Proper Drivers And Might Be Really Neat To Try

Please Don't Give Negitive Feed Back

So you want to use the DAP screen as a monitor for your PC?

This may or may not be technically possible on some of them (many players have hardware USB chips that just do MSC), but even if technically possible (I don't know) would be both difficult and not likely to happen.  I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's not possible currently, because no-one has done the work to make it happen. It's perfectly possible that someone could come along and do that work though. Just don't hold your breath.

Why have you capitalised every word in your post?

Actually, I don't think this is even theoretically possible. Even if USB satisfies the bandwidth requirements for a monitor (and that's a big if), there isn't a standardized device class.

There's something called Monitor Control Class but that's as far as it goes. Quote from the specs:
Quote
The Universal Serial Bus Monitor Control Class focuses on the management and control of monitors. USB
is not used to transfer the information actually displayed on the monitor. USB’s available bandwidth is not
sufficient for this task.
(emphasis mine)

Therefore, we would need to 1) design a protocol, 2) write the driver for the DAPs, 3) write the host-side drivers. I think this goes well beyond the scope of Rockbox.

I don't see the point in streaming from a PC (presumably with a monitor) to a DAP and its tiny screen.

I have no idea how these things work but they look neat... http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/usb-gadgets/c609/

They're a PC-style video chipset accessed over a kludged together custom USB protocol, same as the others, so they come up as an entire second video card.
