Everything's super slow - what I'm doing wrong?

Keno:
Hey there,

I installed Rockbox 3.4 on my iRiver H320 (using the 1.29EU firmware). Everything worked flawless. Then I copied about 2200 songs on it and did a database update afterwards.

When the database update was done I tried to play some songs but everything takes ages. Starting a song takes about 20s and even skipping a song takes 10s. I noticed that, while playing a song, it says xx/1000 on the lower boarder of the screen. So i thought maybe the maximum of songs is 1000.

Therefore I connected the player via USB again, moved the songs to a different directory and copied about 120 songs to the MUSIC directory on the player in the hope it would solve the problem. Unfortunately everything is still slow as hell and I ask myself what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance.

torne:
Try enabling the directory cache.

Keno:
thanks. that worked great.

torne:
Was it still taking 20 seconds with only 120 files in the MUSIC directory, btw? Does the time taken vary noticeably with the number of files, or is it always huge?

It will be slower without the dircache, but I'm not sure it should ever be *that* slow...

Thanks for any more info you can provide, as there may be a real bug here which is just getting worked around by the dircache..

Keno:
Yes, it still took 20s to load a song with 120 files in the MUSIC directory and 10s to skip to another song. With directory cache enabled it starts playing and skips instantly.

I'm not an expert so I can only imagine that it has something to do with the database I created for the 2200 files before?
