one AA for multiple albums problem
« on: November 30, 2009, 09:36:25 PM »
alrighty after days of searching, editing and testing I've given up and decided to post on the forum.

I'm running 3.4 on an 80GB ipod video (on vista)

I'm trying to make it so that i can boot into ipod FW so it can work in my cars alpine x100 (rockbox isnt compatible as far as i can tell)
to this i used media monkey to sync my music. MM put the music and AA on according to apples silly file system. to get the AA to work, i put a folder in .rockbox called "albumart" and using the "album art tagger" script suggested in the wiki and manual. This moved the AA over and named them "albumname.jpg"

I'm really at a loss here and would appreciate any input you guys have when you have time.

Thanks,
Tom

I probably shouldn't read the forum when I'm tired, but I don't think I understand what you're asking.

If your Alpine X100 is not compatible with Rockbox, then you need to boot into the original Apple firmware (turn the iPod on and immediately engage the Hold switch).  In this case, Media Monkey will have placed your album art correctly and it should display under the Apple firmware.

If you want the Media Monkey artwork to display in Rockbox, you will need to make a second copy of each cover in your .rockbox\albumart folder with each album cover .jpg named artist-albumtitle.jpg.

So if you're playing Queen's "Night at the Opera" album (and your iPod shows up as drive letter "x"), your art .jpg for that album will be:
x:\.rockbox\albumart\Queen-Night at the Opera.jpg

Um...right?  I'd suggest if you're putting all your art in one folder to specify the artist name like that, just in case you have the "Greatest Hits" from several different artists.

If you spell anything differently ("Night At The Opera" vs. "Night at the Opera"), Rockbox may not display the art correctly.

Lastly, check the bottom of this page:
http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-ipodvideo/rockbox-buildap3.html#x18-355000C

...for some limitations on how your .jpg files are saved and which symbols may be replaced.

Someone yell if I'm wrong--I'm tired and I personally use the "cover.jpg" image in each album folder for my album art.

Bedtime.

sry was a little late for me too (exams are comin up) but to make it work in the car thats what i have been doing (booting into apple)

the filename for the AA as tagged by the media monkey script is simply the album, not the artist. but according to the page you posted, that should work?(point number 6)

i have way to many albums to do this manually, and i used to do the "cover.jpg" method but unfortunately apple doesnt like that file structure very much

rule 6, ../albumtitle.{jpeg,jpg,bmp} means the file needs to be in the directory above the audio file. The ".." refers to the directory above.

If you are putting the album art in /.rockbox/albumart/ then *only* rule 5 in the list applies; rules 1-4 are for album art in the same directory as the audio file only; rules 6-7 are for album art in the directory above the audio file only.

You will need to rename all the album art.

/Cds/artist abc/album2/song.mp3

That's not helpful; the original poster is using the Apple file structure where files are placed in arbitrary locations, not in folders for each artist/album, so nothing except /.rockbox/albumart/artist-album.jpg will work.

ok i think i understand now, but still need a way to tag them all properly. Is there any way (script) to mass edit them automatically or is the only way to get the all in the format "artist-album.jpg" to do it manually.

thanks for the help so far guys, really clearing things up

Yes, there are applications that can mass rename images.  IrfanView is a freeware application for Windows that can do this.
