I'm no developer, but I'm guessing this is good news:

Walrus:
Wish they would do this for the new 500 GB models that just came out.  Apparently the firmware (even with it's Android features) is pretty bad, which has been keeping me from buying one.

TexasRockbox:
Whether or not this concession makes the player "Rockbox-able" remains to be seen.  Archos has been mired in firmware Hades since the release of the 5 and 7 models.  With other models on the horizon: 9 and 13 (Intel based) I suspect they are eager to get out of the firmware business.  Resources allocated to these firmware issues has to be choking this small company to death.
