Does installation of rockbox clear internal memory?

Answer should be in faq :> Got Cowon D2, external sd should be safe, but internal flash memory will stay untouch or will it be formatted?

Installing rockbox does not require formatting on *any* device, as far as I know.

Edit: Except mac-formatted ipods, and the installer won't do that for you, you have to do it manually.
