Unable to install Rockbox on 80gb IPod Video
« on: November 26, 2009, 04:14:08 AM »
I am unable to re-install a new version of Rockbox, because the installation utility does not find the device.
It's likely due to the fact that when I plug my iPod into my computer it never shows up with a drive letter. The iPod (with Rockbox) just indicates that it is charging when the USB is plugged into the computer.
Is there any setting in Rockbox to allow the iPod and the computer to interface again?

Thanks

If the Ipod doesn't show up when connected how do you transfer data to it? Besides, some more information would be helpful: what OS are you using, does it work if the Apple firmware is booted, is Itunes running?

And also is it an iPod video or an iPod Classic?

I am running Windows xp. I have not tried to re-install the original Apple firmware. I have never installed itunes (and hopefully never will). And the ipod is an ipod video.
Originally, I was able to connect to the computer, and thats how I originally uploaded music. But in the past 6 months it hasn't been able to connect.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a semi-broken USB cable to me.

I tried a different USB cable and it did not make any difference. I also tried it on a friend's computer and it still made no difference.
Sounds like no one ever had this problem before...

Can you try connecting the ipod when the OF is running?
By default RB is set up to be able to boot to either the OF or RB, there are instructions in the manual to achieve this.
There's also the emergency disk mode, which can be accessed by following the steps here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodFAQ#How_do_I_restore_my_broken_iPod

If you can't make a USB connection while the OF is running, then I'd assume that it's a hardware issue.

Thanks Evilnick.
I loaded the Ipod in the original firmware, connected it to my computer, and miraculously it worked! Of course I instantly installed the newest version of Rockbox and everything seems normal now.
So if anybody has trouble connecting Rockbox to the computer, it seems like a good idea to boot it in the OF.

Thanks again.
