MIDI API for LUA and/or library for plugins

With a MIDI API or library in place some great plugins could be written (a lot easier/faster) for some simple auto-accompaniment/random exercises/whatnot for musicians (and those aspiring to be), along with a lot of other things I'm not clever enough to think of myself.
