Sansa e280 V2 newbie questions....
dkdias:
I am VERY new to Rockbox. I only found your site yesterday, but I am very interested. I did some research yesterday on this site, but I don't think I have all the information I need. IF someone could help me answer a couple questions, I would certainly appreciate it! I have confirmed that I have a Sansa e280 v2.
1) I read that there is a Rockbox firmware upgrade available for my Sansa e280 v2, but that the upgrade could make my e280 v2 into a brick. How often does this happen, that they turn into bricks? Is there anyone in this forum that has done the upgrade to their e280 v2 and NOT had a problem......is it risky to install Rockbox into my Sansa e280 v2?
2)If I install the Rockbox firmware, (I somewhat understand that I can boot into either Rockbox or the original Sansa firmware (sort of like Ubuntu and Windows on the same computer)), will Rockbox be able to access the original songs already installed or will I have to install the same songs into Rockbox to be able to play them?
3) I somewhat understand the idea of the dual boot idea, but how much memory is used up with the firmwares both being installed? My e280 only has 8 gigs of memory?
Thank you for your help with these quesitons!!
Domonoky:
1) The bricking risk for the e200v2 should be minimal. I think nobody managed to bricked it till now (apart from some devs while early development).
2) Rockbox should be able to use the music you already loaded on the mp3player, if they dont contain DRM. (If you transfered them via MTP they might be hidden, but the database should be able to find them).
3) Rockbox only needs a few MB, i dont know the exact space it needs on the player. But it should be less then 50MB..
So just try it, you can always uninstall if you dont like it..

dkdias,
I've been running Rockbox on my e280v2 for over a month now. The only drawbacks are the USB not fully functional yet & no charging with Rockbox. But you can reboot to the OF to do updates & to charge. It's not that big of a deal to me. YMMV.

Rockbox charges fine. Actually we had charging before we had audio playback on the e200v2 IIRC.

I have a E260R v1 and it works great. last release of RB had a few bugs but as far as i can tell with 3.4 i have no bugs.
As a added bonous i can read 4 gig and 8gig uSDHC cards with RB and Rhapsody does not allow for bigger cards.
One note for the data base to work on my unit properly you need to add the database.unignore file to the directories where you store you music.
PS. for those who are reading this. the last version had problems with battery life/charging under rock box. those problems are gone with ver 3.4 releasted on the nov 24th. Roxbox on my E260R v1 is great, and i do play doom on it. Thanks for all your hard work RB team!!!
