Sansa e280 booting/playing troubles

I have a Sansa e280 with Rockbox 3.3 and love it. However, it has started to give me troubles. When I press the on button, the scroll wheel lights up, but nothing happens, so I press and hold the play/pause and fast forward buttons simultaneously, which starts the player, if Rockbox has started but is still loading and I let go of the buttons the following text appears on my screen:
ATA error: -219
Press ON to debug
This makes it impossible to get the SVN number, and since I don't appear to have a version option in my system menu, I can't give it here. If someone could help me find it that would be nice.
If I do get into the menu, tasks such as loading the database, credits or shutting down the player cause it to freeze, forcing me to do a hard reboot by removing the battery. So my player is useless until these problems are fixed. Any ideas?

In the System menu, select Rockbox Info. The Version is shown there (e.g. r23391-091028).

One simple thing to try is running chkdsk to ensure there is no filesystem corruption.

A known issue with the e200v1 players is that the memory module can sometimes disconnect from the main circuit board.  This can happen is the player is dropped.  This can usually be corrected by removing the back cover and gently pressing the black rectangular foam located above the battery pack.

I tried that, see the attached image. Anyways I run GNU/Linux, would fsck be acceptable?

I have had no luck fixing the player using this method, but I have discovered that pressing the black foam rectangle turns the player off. I will try some more.

hmm, it appears attempting to sync crashes the player.

Well, the player works better (but not perfectly) when I remove the various covers leaving the circuit board exposed and hold the battery in place.
