Installer cannot see Ipod 5.5

I have an 5th generation 30GB Ipod.  I've confirmed with the serial number that it's a 5.5 Generation.  I'm attempting to load RockBox via Ubuntu 9.10.

Autodetect does not detect Ipod.

I attempt to manually direct the installer to the mount point -- /media/EMMA (the Ipod name)

When I run the installer I get --

No Ipod detected
Permission for disc access denied!

Any ideas? I had accidentally loaded the bootloader previously and gotten an error message, but was able to uninstall it.

If you don't have permission to write to the ipod you're probably not running as root.  Try sudo.

I wasn't able to get sudo to work, but was able to get it to work by logging in as root.  Thanks!
