Restoring DRM after RB removed
« on: November 14, 2009, 03:06:52 PM »
I read many posts on the DRM issue. If you want DRM, dont use RB. Simple.
What I wanted to understand is what is happening (Fuze particularly)
in the player to permanently disable DRM if RB is removed and a clean
OF put back?

Rockbox firmware does not decode any tracks encoded with DRM.  Rockbox doesn't do anything to DRM tracks -- it just won't play them.   Original firmware may play DRM tracks.  If Rockbox is removed and the original firmware restored, then all should be as it was.   That's how I understand it.

It might help if you said what player you're talking about

See the note on this page next to the install directions:

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SansaAMS

AFAIK this is the extent of what is known about the issue on the Fuze.

DRM problems with the Fuze and other AMS Sansas were thought to be caused by improper handling of the rtc.  This has been fixed, and there have been some reports of DRM working in the OF after installing Rockbox.  This may not be true in all cases.

I started out with the V1 Fuze (8G) in mind, as that is what I currently
have. And I was specifically interested in AudioBook DRM, as I won't
waist my time with DRM music. But I wasn't sure if I should be asking this
as specific to the Fuze or generic to the way RB loads into players.

Yes, I understand that RB sees DRM files as just corrupted files.
And I appreciate the position of the developers regarding DRM,
as I dislike it as well. But several of the experts here referred to
"permanently disabling" use of DRM audio. (Nos-specific
as to devices.) If removing RB and restoring clean OF gets back Mfgr
operation with DRM files working, its not permanent.

Further, I couldn't find a clear answer in the forum to whether
DRM would no longer work under either RM or OF in dual boot
or just not in RB. FI, can I boot to OF and use DRM Audiobooks?

mc2739 is too fast for me with his response, but it does illuminate
for me the statement above.

So the question, does loading RB necessarily modify the player
in a way that cannot be restored? Are the changes to the hidden
flash, to get the bootloader working, non-reversable and remain
behind to be seen somehow by the clean OF?

This is all not withstanding the non-zero possibility of bricking the
player. And I do appreciate that the developers are working with
a lot of black-box unknowns in these players.

For the third time, we don't know.  Let us know if you find out.
