Apple firmware won't boot on my 5.5G Ipod video [SOLVED]
cereal_killer:
Hey guys,
last week on Wednesday I installed RB on my ipod with RButil (using quick start, complete install) and I am completely satisfied with it and how it works (what is great, by the way). But somehow I can't boot the apple firmware.
I found a Thread with a similar problem, but that was due to an outdated version of Rockbox.
here are some informations:
When I try to switch the player on by pressing Select and immediately turning on the Hold switch the apple appears becomes bright and then the disk spins down with a click and the screen becomes black. Then the apple appears again, becomes bright and immediately the disk spins down again with the same noise. This repeats maybe endlessly until I put the Hold switch back and then finally Rockbox boots.
When I connect the player to the computer with the hold key activated the same thing happens. Endless spinning up and down without any firmware booting until I put the Hold switch back and then Rockbox boots. Then first an USB plug and then a black/white screen appears saying "do not disconnect" the player charges and I can access my Ipod via the Explorer on my Computer, what is fine. After safely removing the player, the screen says "OK to disconnect" and I disconnect the player from my computer Rockbox boots, what I think is fine too.
I also tried to hardreset the player by pressing Menu and Select without any result.
Any suggestions how to boot the OF?
Kind regards, c_k.

It sounds like something is wrong with your Apple firmware, as every time when it should boot it just reboots instead. You can try Restoring it with iTunes to get the Apple firmware running again, then reinstall Rockbox.

Thank you Chronon for your answer.
Before I installed Rockbox I was restoring the iPod and the OF worked without problems. So as far as I know the Installation of Rockbox should not damage the Apple firmware or the iPod bootloader, or could it?
Is there a way to reinstall the apple firmware without the "restore" function in iTunes, what will wipe all my files off the player?
Thanx, c_k.

I dont believe that you can. The best thing to do would be to make a back up of your device, and store it on some other media device (such as you Hard drive). Then restore your iPod and finish by copying the back up of the player back on to it.
EDIT: sorry, for the misleading info. there. You can check out this page to manually do the restore: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodManualRestore

There is an easier way IMHO to get to the OF that is simply to hold menu at boot.
I always prefer this as the hold method will work, but get the timing wrong and it will clear Rockbox settings.
