LCD screen on iRiver H120
« on: November 03, 2009, 03:53:01 PM »
I got an iRiver 120 that the HDD broke on and I never got around to replace it. As a project I thought it would be fun to try to make use of the LCD screen. My thought is to connect it to my computer and make some output on the screen. However I'm not sure where to start. The first question would be if it actually is a way to connect the player to the computer and send signals to the screen? If so, what modifications would I need to do in the iRiver?

Would be great if somebody could point me in the right direction! :)

The USB on the H100 series is controlled directly by a built in piece of hardware, and is only usable for making the disk drive available. You can't control other parts of the player with it.

it is possible but you would need to get the screen out of it and figure out which wires would go in to what ever you would be using to connect it to the computer. so unless you now your way inside and out of the lcd screen and your computers method of display then it will still take you about a couple months.

The H100 is a very well respected player, especially for folk who like to record, and even with a broken HDD is probably worth something. If you got some money you could then look at the many sources for micro controller experimentation (Aurdino, etc).

If you want to have a go at your iRiver you could look at the serial port that someone found http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IriverHardwareComponents#TXD_RXD_connectors. There may even be some support for it in rockbox, you'd need to build a bit of hardware to do the level shifting and then write some code...
