bought used iPod Video...any things i have to mind?

(1/1)

cereal_killer:
Hello Rockbox community.

I bought a used 80GB Ipod Video 5.5 generation and I can't wait to install Rockbox on it. Are there some things that I have to mind, because I want a clean (diskwise of course) and fast player. So is it sufficient to just restore the player in iTunes or is it necessary to reformat the disk to wipe off all old data and leftover files and then restore the player?

Is that true, that the speed of navigation through files and the loading of files will decrease over time of use, because that is what i am worried about.

I am looking forward to your answers and suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

c_k.

LambdaCalculus:
A restore in iTunes for Windows is usually enough to wipe the iPod's hard drive and format it to the required FAT32 filesystem, as it formats the hard drive and then reapplies the iPod firmware partition.

As for the speed of navigation through files and loading of files decreasing over time, I've noticed no real differences between a fresh install versus an install that I've had for years.

Chronon:
A restore will also write a new partition table in certain cases (like a MacPod being restored on Windows iTunes).

Your player shouldn't suffer much from file system fragmentation because there's a minimal amount of writing to disk during normal operation: The disk usage pattern is much different from a usual PC scenario.

Thanks a lot LambdaCalculus379 and Chronon for your answers.

Forgot to mention, that I don't know what OS the former owner used and that I am running WinXP on my machine.

But now my questions are answered and I am looking forward to enjoy RB.

Kind regards,

c_k.
