Entries disappear from DB. was: Gigabeat F
« on: October 27, 2009, 12:51:49 PM »
Hello all.

I have a Toshiba Gigabeat F, running the current (3.4) build of Rockbox. I have about 29 gigabytes of music on my player, which all plays perfectly on my computer, via either Songbird or Windows Media Player.

However, after I start up the player, I frequently cannot play several of my music files. They will show up in the database, but will not play. Sometimes, they disappear from the database.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Have you run a file system check to verify that the file system is in good shape?

Thank You for your suggestion. I just ran that when I had my Gigabeat plugged in, and it said that everything was good.

Do you (anybody) have any other ideas?

You might post your database related settings.  Deleting all of the *.tcd files and rebuilding the database may be something to try too.  Though, I have to admit, entries disappearing from the database sounds strange.

Do the files play properly from the file browser?  What format are the files?

All my files are in MP3 format - no DRM anywhere.

And the files that disapear don't play form the files menu, either. It's frustrating.

where are the .tcd files located? and what database settings would you like me to post?

If you can't play them by selecting them from the file browser either, then there's nothing wrong with the database: a file that can't be opened/parsed for some reason will not play no matter where you play it from, and will be removed from the database if the db is updated..

I thought that my files where corrupted somehow, but they all play perfectly on my computer (through Songbird), so I think there's somenthing else going on.

Embedded album art is known to cause problems as well as improper tag formats such as ape tags on mp3.

These things shouldn't prevent playback of MP3 files at least (Ogg Vorbis files is another matter). I couldn't find anything along these lines when searching for music playback bugs.

OK, I removed all the embedded album art

did nothing, still can't play some of my albums

The only way I could get them to re-appear is to provide new files/a new rip of the CD, and I can't necessary do that for all my files.

Should I jettison this MP3 player, and move on to another model?
