Installer can't see Ipod5.5

I downloaded the installer, connected Ipod 5.5. It shows up as a drive.  asked installed to autodetect.  It could not.  selected 80gig Ipod 5.5.  Install fails.  Do I need Itunes installed on PC for Installer to see the Ipod.  Point me to a faq, wiki link, something.  Installing rockbox on my sansa was a snap. Not so much with the Ipod Video 5.5gen

For some reason, it wasn't going into drive mode read/write.  Did the  menu/Select, and play/select and rockbox installed.

However, got a

"Unable to remove corrupted file: E://.rockbox/fonts/12-Sazanami-Mincho.fnt"

when the fonts package installed.  Tried doing a re-install of just the fonts, same error

This sounds like filesystem issues on the player. Please run "chkdsk /f e:" (replace e: by the drive letter that got assigned to your Ipod).
