e260 v1 or v2
« on: October 17, 2009, 03:19:47 PM »
Thanks for the awesome software. I just got a refurbished Sansa e260. The back of the device says its a v2, but the software info says its running software 01. Is my understanding correct that this is a V1 and not a V2?

I would normally not question this, but the Rockbox utility recognizes it as a v2 (unstable). So I went ahead and did the v2 and it just boots back into the factory software. I manually switched Rockbox to install v1 and it boots up, music works, etc. This seems to work well, but it likes to constantly turn back on into USB mode even if I pull the battery out. I have tried doing the safe device removal to no avail.

This is quite common with refurbished units.  If your firmware version starts with 01, it is not a v2 (v2 firmware starts with 03).

This should not happen.  I'll try to reproduce this on my e200.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here?  Do you mean that it enters USB mode when you attach the USB/charger cable?  That is normal operation for Rockbox.  You can press the select (center) button while inserting the cable to go into "charge mode".  This allows you to charge the battery while still using the e200.

For more useful information, you might want to check out the Rockbox manual.  You can access it online, or download it to your computer.  Just follow the link in the column on the left.

Thanks. It still auto selects V2 even after installing Rockbox software for V1.

I have looked the manual over and can't tell if I am doing anything wrong. Anytime I turn the device on it enters USB mode even if there is no USB cable plugged in at that time. I have had to hold in the center button every time I turn it on. The only thing I can think of is that its somehow the unit itself or an issue with Windows 7.

I have tried formatting, flashing back to the original V01 Sansa software and reinstalling Rockbock. I hope to have access to an XP machine later to see if unplugging the Sansa from that takes it out of USB mode.

Does this happen in the original firmware too?

It could be the signal Rockbox uses to detect the USB connection is stuck.

While in the Rockbox main menu, go to System->Debug->View I/O ports.  Under GPIO STATES: in the left column, report back the value that is listed for B: with the USB cable attached to your computer and with it removed.  When you attach the cable while in this screen, you do not need to press the select button since it is prevented from switching to USB mode.

No, when I unplug with the original firmware it resets back into user mode as normal.

OK, listing the steps I did to make sure I did it right.
I turned it on with NO USB and held select  - B: FF
Then I plugged in the USB and have the same - B: FF

The value does not change if USB is plugged in or not plugged in.
I also turned it on with USB and holding select - B: FF. Unplugging the cable B is still: FF

Just tried Windows XP to make sure Windows 7 wasn't at fault and still boots back into USB mode.

With no USB on a v1 I see for GPIO B EF and it changes to FF when the USB cable is connected.

Can you list the boot version you have installed, and the version of Rockbox you have installed?
Both are displayed when the unit is powered on.

On my e200v1, with no cable connected, I get B: EF
And when I connect the cable, I get B: FF

This confirms that you have a stuck bit that Rockbox uses to detect USB mode. This is a hardware issue.

With some modifications to Rockbox, you may be able to get it to boot to the main menu with no keypress, go to charge mode with the select (like current operation), and enter USB mode with another (maybe REC).

Thanks. It still auto selects V2 even after installing Rockbox software for V1.

In Rockbox Utility, on the main screen, click the change button.  On the Configuration screen, press the Autodetect button on the bottom.  With my e200v1, it autodetects correctly.  Click OK to save the selected device.  After you exit the program, it will retain your selected device.

Thanks for your help. I was thinking it could be a hardware issue since it is a refurb, just strange it works with original firmware but not rockbox.
