Author Topic: Problem installing to iPod Photo (Read 2766 times)

I've been trying to install Rockbox onto my old iPod Photo. I went through the Rockbox utility, and thought I had it installed. However, anytime I start up my ipod, I get a black screen with white text that reads:

TOSHIBA MK2006GAL

Error!
Can't load rockbox.ipod;
File not found
Hold MENU+SELECT to reboot
then SELECT+PLAY for disk mode

And that's it. When I try to reboot it into disk mode (using those instructions), it goes right back to that black screen. Also, when its plugged into my computer, it's not recognized (even in Disk Utility) as a disk. So my ipod is basically a useless brick.

What can I do?

Sounds like rbutil somehow didn't copy the .rockbox folder to your player, or else something went wrong with that folder thats preventing the bootloader from seeing it.

Reboot into disk mode like the message says (Apple has more detailed instructions if you need them), then check if the .rockbox folder is there.

OK, finally got it to boot into disk mode and get it connected to my computer after quite a few tries. Once it was recognized by my computer, I opened up the rbutilqt program and found the ipod as my mountpoint. I uninstalled rockbox from it, and then did the Quick Start installation to it to try again. During the Progress, right after "Installing Rockbar bootloader" there was "Could Not open Ipod." Here is the saved log... oh, and it's doing the same thing with the black screen and that message again after this as well.

You're experiencing a known issue: during installation of the bootloader the Ipod needs to get unmounted. This is done automatically, but unfortunately there's currently no handling of this -- Rockbox Utility would need to wait for the system to remount the player and afterwards check if the mountpoint is still correct. This first part is something I've done a while ago, but as I don't have access to a Mac I have no idea if it's working correctly. My tests (on Linux) worked well, but that doesn't mean much. If you are able to build Rockbox Utility yourself I'd be really grateful if you could try that change and report back so we can actually include it -- given its working correctly.
