From my understanding it's a name thus nothing that should be translated at all. Check also this message about the project name: http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2002-01/0134.shtml

Does "Linux" have specific a meaning? Does "McDonalds" have a specific meaning? Does "Microsoft" have a specific meaning?

It's a word like that - it is just a name with nothing more or less.

It shouldn't be changed or translated, it should be left as it is if at all possible.

Maybe the last 2 examples are not the best since they are both translated in China :)

McDonalds: 麦当劳 (mai dang lao, just a transliteration)
Microsoft: 微软 (wei ruan, literal translation of micro and soft)

A transliteration would probably be okay. Even a literal translation wouldn't be too bad if there's a literal translation for "Rock" (as in the quality of music to be 'rocking') and "box" (which I assume there is).

I guess my point was more that trying to assign it a meaning like was attempted in the third post in the thread seemed a way to simply introduce difficulties in communicating what's being talked about.

Is the name "Rockbox" copyrighted?  If so, would translations affect the copyright of that name?

Generally you should actually read a thread before responding to it.

I always saw "Rockbox" as a playful mash of a few ideas in one otherwise nonsensical compound word:

Rock - as in the action of rocking or shaking, in this case jarring the dust off a cramped, outmoded operating system and unlocking shiny new potential.  Also meaning a popular music style associated with rebellion.

Box - not only reminiscent of "jukebox" when paired with "rock" in this way, but also a reference to the boxy nature of most MP3 jukeboxes.

I think maybe I think too much about this stuff...
