Rockbox skips certain Ogg Vorbis files
« on: October 05, 2009, 01:34:45 PM »
Hi,

I've been using rockbox for about a year now, and I absolutely love it.

I have an ihp140 from iriver (a.k.a. the hp140).

I have ripped some books on tape that I own using grip, I dropped the bit rate down to 96 (because there is no music).  The files play beautifully under the IRiver firmware, and they play under Amarok just fine.

For some reason, when I try to play them on rockbox, my disk light starts going bonkers, and it skips through all of the ogg files for that entire book! Then it starts playing the next book instead (though the display still reads the first book).

I have other books that I have recorded at a bit rate of 96, and they work fine...

Any ideas what is going on here?

Thanks!

Oh yes, this problem occurs under RB 3.2 and 3.4.

What format are the tags in? Grip has been known to put ID3 tags on Vorbis files, and that can cause Rockbox some trouble.

I think you are onto something here, Llorean.

I re-ripped without id3v2 tags... and it works.

The problem is, the wife's player only reads v2 tags :(

I'll mess with it a bit.. maybe the tags are just too long....

Id3v2 tags don't actually work with Vorbis, so putting them on files generally makes the files unplayable.  You need to remove all of them if you want the files to work.

Vorbis should always have Vorbis Comments on them, not ID3 tags.

Of course!  How silly of me!

Sorry! I had totally forgotten about that...  It has been years since I did a oggenc by hand...

I don't see any vorbiscomment settings on Grip, only ID3.  It must automatically add the vorbiscomments to oggfiles, I guess there is nothing to really configure there...

Thanks!

Hello, problems with Ogg Vorbis files relate with the pictures inside the file. Big pictures in files is problems to play this files. Sorry for English.

Big pictures in Vorbis files are also not recommended by the standard.  Large cover art may or may not decode depending on exactly how its inserted, how large it is, and how much RAM is available on the player IIRC.

There's no reason to put album art directly into files anyway. A single 'folder.jpg' or 'cover.jpg' is all you need inside each album folder. Hell 'album.jpg', %albumtitle%.jpg or other combinations work with any modern player, and that includes rockbox. Embedding art in files is wasted space and completely unnecessary. Plus winamp and foobar2000 both can be set to copy over your 'folder.jpg' files while transcoding or synching which is really awesome.
