Are you using Cygwin or VMware?

If you describe which steps you are finding confusing you are more likely to get answers.

I don't think one is really much easier then the other, it just depends if you want to be using a virtual machine or running the compiler natively through a compatibility layer.  Most people don't use cygwin just because its slow.

If you really read http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SimpleGuideToCompiling you would have seen the section called Adding Patches.

The way I see it you can either explain what problem you had or give up.

ok i'll try to explain in more detail but first the reason im not being so clear is because im just getting stuck at the first step of each thing >.<

EDIT: the first part im stuck on in the adding patches part of the simple guide to compiling is the question that says "In the cmd window, go to the directory containing the patch (use the commands mentioned earlier on in this guide)"
My question is, what command window???

ANOTHER EDIT: i was wondering if some could please take the spare time to compile this patch http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/2911?getfile=20189 with the latest rockbox build because my brain hurts to much from smashing it into the wall trying to think

it wasnt a problem.

You should still take the time to set up your *own* build environment. If you are a windows users, Cygwin will most likely seem easier to use and understand.

Check this page out for seeing how to install cygwin: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CygwinInstallWithScreenShots

Then after that follow the Simple Guide to Compiling. You will want to execute all of the commands listed in the *Cygwin Bash Shell* which will look kind of like a Command Prompt, except be black on green/white text. After you take about an hour or so to go through it you will then look back at it be like "WOW, that was easy".
