iPod 5g "Codec Failure" and messy menus (rockbox 3.4)

I've just upgraded my iPod 5g to rockbox 3.4 from 3.3, and all kinds of things are wrong. Most notably, every time I try to play a song I get a "Codec failure" message. It then tries to play the next song in the playlist, with the same result, etc. etc.
The menus are a little messed up as well. Rather, I should say that the text on menu items is messed up. For example, for the settings menu I get:
Sound Settings
Playback Settings
General Settings
Central European (SP 1250)
Browse Themes
.talk mp3 clip
The menus seem to point to the correct item based on their order, but the text is wrong. As another example, if I select "General Settings", the menu I get is:
Playlists
Disable resume on startup if phones unplugged
Database
<All tracks>
[and so forth...]
I noticed similar problems with development builds between 3.3 and 3.4 as well. And I've had no problem with 3.3.

Codec failure is usually a symptom of updating some parts of Rockbox but not others, and I can imagine the menu issue could also be caused by a mismatched language file.
Try deleting the .rockbox folder in its entirety (save config.cfg as a back up for your settings if you want), then unzip a new build.
See what that does - if all is well then copy your settings back (or change them again), if not let us know.

I'm presuming you didn't use RBUtil to do the upgrade ?

Thanks for the replies.
GodEater: No, I tried initially but it was having network problems (which seemed strange since I could access the internet with no problem), so I did the upgrade manually by moving the new .rockbox folder and overwriting the old one.
I did get a clean install of the new version to work fine. After that worked, I looked for differences in files between the working installation and my upgrade attempt. The only major difference I saw was that there were no database files (.tcd) in the working installation. I deleted all of the .tcd files in the failed upgrade, tried that one again again, and it worked without any problems.

Wow, that's really weird! Anyway, I'm glad it is all working now

It is weird. I didn't run into anything related to it anywhere, so I suppose it's not a very common problem. I'd be curious to see if it happens for anyone else with a custom tagnavi file (or maybe just anyone else who uses the database often).
