Iriver will not read in computer - possible bootloader issue
« on: September 28, 2009, 12:10:16 PM »
Hello! I am having trouble getting my computer to read my iriver. I think it is corrupted/bootloader. I had it plugged it while I was getting an update on my security software the autoplay feature came up on my computer like it normally does when I plug in my h120 and half way through it stopped. I have another iriver h320 (rockbox) and I plugged it last night and reads just fine so I know that my h120 is corrupted. I turned it on with the original firmware so I can see if it boots ok and yes it does with the original software but show the rockbox files. I am using ver 1.66 rockbox. I can not get my computer to read my iriver when I plug it in any usb port. Thanks, Mike

you can openly advise of solutions or pm which ever. Thanks again

It is unlikely to be a corrupted bootloader - writing to that needs the upgrade mechanism of the original firmware, and you can sart the original firmware and it sounds like it is running OK.

Can you connect to your H100 using the USB when running the original firmware or in the bootloader (plug in the USB with the unit switched off)?

What exactly do you see on your screen when trying to boot Rockbox on the player?

Wehjn I plug it in - it shows the usb connection but the computer is not reading teh device. You can hear the iriver drive spinning/working but nothing else. The computer will kind of freeze if I have the explorer up to view my drives. Yes I have tried to connect with the original firmware as well same reaction. When I turn on the unit with the original firmware it does show the rockbox files on the unit. is it possible to delete those and start from zero or ? Thanks for your assistance, Mike

could I try to reload it on a different computer and reload it or delete the rockbox files?

I have a feeling....

I suppose you have two options;
A) check and fix the drive using the utilities on your PC (I'm no PC support expert - so can't offer any help on that)
B) re-format the drive using the iRiver firmware then put Rockbox and your music back on the player.

If the connection to your PC doesn't work whether you run the original firmware or Rockbox, then is suggests the problem is with neither.

Either the USB hardware in the device is shot (most likely from what you describe), or the disk is playing up (less likely, since then I wouldn't expect you to be able to browse the files on it from either of the firmwares).

Maybe. Those are possibilities but I was basing my assessment on the description of what was going on when the H100 was plugged in - and a lot of hope...

I'm hoping that the symptoms are caused by by partition table/FAT corruption (and the iRiver software is very tolerant of disk errors).

Another long shot is the infamous USB/Disk board issue.

It would be possibly to qualify the symptoms by taking the drive out and putting it into a caddy or the H300 (rockbox won't work of course!) - but speaking as someone else who has an H100 and an H300 I wouldn't go to that effort...

Thanks for the great input. The iriver will not read in any of the usb ports on my computer through the usb hub or direct inputs. I am trying to hook with someone else to see if it can read the iiriver on a diff computer or not. The h320 I have as well reads fine on any of the usb ports including the hub. The iriver h120 in which I am having the problems with will boot up in the original firmware and it shows the files for rockbox. Is it possible to delete the rockbox files and then re-connect to my computer and start from ground zero. I have a feeling that f I can delete the possibly corruped rockbox firmware I can get the computer to read my iriver h120 again with just the original firmware.  and then reload the rockbox software.

-----I have done this and the iriver h120 will show that it uis connected via usb but the explorer on my computer bogs down and unable to read it as a drive/device (it should read as hard drive (P) on my computer. I have tried getting the computer to read the iriver h120 inserting teh iriver powered off connected to the computer and then turning the unit and with power plugging into my computer. Thanks for everyones assistance. Cheers, Mike

The USB on the H120 is controlled by hardware, not software. Removing Rockbox will not solve your problem.

If you can't find any tools to check/repair the drive while it is trying to connect to the PC then I guess the options are;
A) re-format the drive using the original firmware and see if you can now read/write the drive (if so re-installing rockbox is simply to unzip the latest build to the root of the H100 drive)

or

B) connect the drive to the PC using some other method (1.8 inch caddy, or the H300) and see if you can read it - if you can it is likely that he H100 is fried :'( even then though you could get the latest Rockbox and you music on to the drive and put it back into the H100 and hope that it then works (but no USB)

Out of interest can you play any of the music files on the HDD in the original firmware? (assuming that they are compatible)

I can hear the drive trying to work when I plug it in the pc. I have to use the reset button on the bottom to turn it off after inserting in the computer. I can play music on the iriver when in rockbox mode and plays fine. when I went to go to the record for audio or voice the screen went blank and usually it will show the show the recording screen with the time and meters. Thus my reason to believe the files are corrupted and not syncing together with the hardware. when I plug it into the compuer the iriver screen says it connected but does not read on the computer.  when I plug the unit in my computer on the rockbox mode it will read that is plugged into teh computer but the computer does not read it, also then I unplugf the unit from the machine and the usb indicator goes off and shows the main menu for rockbox.

is there anyway I can delete the rockbox files when using the original software, I am still thinking the software is corrupted.

I would like to see how my iriver reacts in a different computer with the original software and with the rockbox software

I appreciate all of the support on this matter. Cheers, Mike

is there any other way of getting teh files to the iriver to re-format the unit by cd or ?
---- what is an 1/8 caddy - mini plug and how wopuld that interface with the compyuter and all.

I have to use the reset button on the bottom to turn it off after inserting in the computer.
That's very strange - the USB on the iRiver is handled by a dedicated chip and the main CPU just sits idly by waiting for a signal to say thet the USB is finished with the drive.

I'm really begining to think that it might be faulty hardware :-(

I'm pretty sure you can (it's been a long time since I saw the original firmware), certainly you can format the drive.
