Thoughts on a future cabbie update
« on: September 20, 2009, 12:54:24 PM »
It has been a very exciting time to watch the progress in Rockbox lately. The changes that have come/are coming to the UI run the gamut between under the hood upgrades and what look to be some very nice eye candy. The one project in particular which looks like it will really bump the already attractive themes up a notch: viewports being used to draw lists, and the proposed custom statusbar. I'm simply curious as to whether these ideas might eventually see their way (in some form) into the cabbie default, and if so, what are some of the concepts bouncing around in people's heads for this particular theme. It would be neat to see some discussion about how to implement these ideas with dignity, if anyone does have some ideas they'd like to voice.

Really, it's a great time to be using Rockbox. I was already impressing friends with my "unique" ipod, I can only imagine the reaction once custom viewports, multifont and anti-aliasing integrate into the project... thanks for the hard work, devs!

Can't speak as to concepts, as I am about as artistically creative as a rock.
As to "when" - it is when someone(s) is (are) willing to take on painting this bikeshed.  The issue said someone(s) will encounter is that the default theme should look as uniform across targets as possible - and this proved to be quite a challenge the first time around.  I expect it to be even more so with list viewports:  there is just a great disparity between target displays (noticeable dimensions in this case) and I'm having a hard time (remember I'm as creative as a rock!) thinking of an aesthetically tweaked list UI which will work on the large and the small.

I think it would be a cool project if the current Rockbox theme'ers (like me) would work on an updated Cabbie theme.

I agree that it will be a challenge, predominately for uniformity's sake. I never actually asked "when"... but I do appreciate the thoughts. it'll definitely need backing from more than one dev to get it going... how did the move to the new default start out? Just as a "contest"? I suppose that wouldn't work as well for getting the ball rolling in this situation.

"Backing from a dev" doesn't mean anything. What it needs are for people to actually step up and do the work. Anyone can do that, and try to get more people involved.

And I sincerely apologize for my choice of words. Of course it can be organized by anyone willing to take on such a project.

this is pretty much how the new default theme was accepted and created. a lot of people joined in and helped.
