ipod data transfer ridiculously slow

(1/3) > >>

foe:
I just bought a secondhand 5th gen ipod video (80gb), and it's unnacceptably slow at data transfer. I've tried different USB ports and changed the 'optimise for performance' rather than 'optimise for quick removal'. Is there anything else I can try?

For comparison I noticed that the 'type' value of the detailed view of 'My Computer' in explorer for the ipod is 'removable disk' and it doesnt list free and used space, whereas the 'type' of my toshiba gigabeat f60 is 'local disk' and it does list free and used space. On this line of thinking I tried reinstalling the usb driver for the ipod, but no dice.

Cheers.

I assume you mean it is slow in Rockbox relative to the Apple firmware?  Or is it slow in both?  Also, what is slow?  If you give some figures, we can see if they are about right or not.

foe:
I can't remember whether I tried pre-rockbox installation, but I think I did, and I think it was slow. I'll try after this copy session.

21.6 GB, windows says about 220 minutes to copy, which varies up and down to about 70 minutes, its probably been copying for about 20 minutes now, and the time remaining hasnt changed from the aforementioned.

Sorry I should have put this topic in support>hardware forum

AlexP:
I don't follow, are the figures you gave in Rockbox or Apple?  You can dual boot to do both.  We need to compare them to see if it is a Rockbox issue or if you have a hardware problem somewhere.  I'm pretty sure Rockbox is slower than the OF at the moment, but we need to see by how much.

Also, the windows time estimation is notoriously bad.  There are free programs out there that will actually time the transfer for you, which would give more reliable figures.

foe:
Well the aforementioned 21.6GB has been copying approximately 100 minutes and now it's saying anywhere from 40-100 minutes remain.
