How to turn rockbox off?
« on: September 16, 2009, 08:11:02 PM »
I put rockbox on my 4th gen ipod color and it works well. But how do you turn it off? In the manual's "3.1.1 The player's controls" section it states that pressing Long Play will shutdown rockbox. But the first screen you see when rockbox starts is the Main Menu. Pressing long play while in the main menu "Exits menu, setting or moves to parent menu." Is this a conflict of hotkeys? Do I have to navigate to a different area to use long play to shut rockbox down?

Look fir "Start OF".

I don't have that Manual so look for the instructions on now to start the ipod firmware.  HTH

I'm able to start the iPod firmware and the original iPod interface. Pressing Long Play in the original firmware will turn the iPod off like it always has. When I reset to the boot menu (by holding menu and select) the iPod will then load rockbox like it should. Since the first rockbox screen is the Main Menu and pressing Long Play in the Main Menu results in a simple exit menu function, I have no way to turn the iPod off while in rockbox. It sits there with rockbox loaded and drains the battery, even when there is no song playing.

Bruce, if you're going to answer, at least answer his question....

howso: the Ipod sucks for buttons.... yes, the only way to turn it off is the really long hold play is the only way to do it. You see the menu first because the normal long play stops the music

Hmm, I've held the play button down for near a minute and no result (if this is what you mean by really long hold play?). I see that Long Play has different functions in different areas of navigation. For example (from the manual):

5.2 Navigating the Main Menu
"Prev or Long Play" = Exits menu, setting or moves to parent menu

4.3.1 WPS Key Controls
"Long Play" = Stop Playback

If this is the case, do I have to be in a certain area (not Menu or WPS since they have commands already assigned) for Long Play to function as a shut down?

I've been trying to find out if I can program a rockbox shutdown function with a new combination of keys that are unused but have found no mention of this. Is it possible?

If you've held the play button for a minute and your iPod has not powered off, then something is broken. It shouldn't take nearly that long, maybe 5 seconds at the most.

It doesn't matter which screen you're in in Rockbox - this works from anywhere.

It's also not the same key press as "Long Play" - There are actually three seperate button push events on the Play key, "Short press on Play", "Long press on Play" and then "Extremely long press on Play". As JdGordon says this is simply due to a lack of buttons on the iPod.

The only way to map shutdown to something else on your iPod is to change the source code and compile your own build.

there is a patch on the tracker to add shutdown to the menu, which I would have nothing against putting it in for some targets, but others do....

I personally think it should go in for all targets. Long button presses can be difficult for a wide range of people including the elderly, and so could be considered an accessibility feature (not to mention having it in the menu reduces the minimum number of buttons for Rockbox to work by one).

Thanks for the replies everyone. GodEater you're probably right that something is wrong with the play button as the unit is many years old. I like the idea of adding shutdown to the menu because in addition to Lloreans points it would also help in my case (where button functions no longer physically work properly on the hardware).
