Car Adapter Mode - SANSA C250 boots to 'normal' menu
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:44:30 PM »
Sansa c250 1.00.04A
Rockbox 3.3
Boot Version 5

Some one stole my old Sansa which I had configured for Car Adapter Mode and it worked beautifully. I finally found a new (old) one on eBay, loaded Rockbox and configured it for Car mode.

When I turn the car on I see the initial Rockbox loader screen then it boots to the original Sana menu. Tried plugging it into my computer and a 110 volt adapter. Same results. It is not returning to the resume playback screen. Turning on the unit with out the USB connected works as I expect, the playback screen.

Ideas? I really miss this functionality.

The current bootloaders do not have support for the Rockbox USB mode.  If you check out the forum thread Sansa, H10 and M:robe 100 bootloaders you will find new bootloaders with Rockbox USB enabled.  This should help with your car adapter mode.

Unless there is a change I haven't heard about, Rockbox Sansa C200 port does not support audio out to the dock port, for FM Transmitters or other speakers.  The E200 port does support the dock port, but not the C200.

In my understanding, this means car adapter mode has limited function.

Car Adaptor Mode has nothing to do with the dock output. The Manual here decribes the mode: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-sansae200/rockbox-buildch8.html#x11-1410008.5.5

8.5.5  Car Adapter Mode
This option turns On and Off the car ignition auto stop function.

Car Adapter Mode:
When using the player in a car, Car Adapter Mode automatically stops playback on the player when power (i.e. from cigarette lighter power adapter) to the external DC in jack is turned off. If the Car Adapter Mode is set to On, Rockbox will pause playback when the external power off condition is detected. Rockbox will then shutdown the player after the length of time set in the Idle Poweroff setting (see above). If power to the DC in jack is turned back on before the Idle Poweroff function has shut the player off, playback will be resumed 5 seconds after the power is applied. This delay is to allow for the time while the car engine is being started.
Once the player is shut off either manually, or automatically with the Idle Poweroff function, it must be powered up manually to resume playback.

The only way power can be supplied for car adapter mode is through the dock connector.

Since headphone use is prohibited in most states, most car adapters will also provide some way to output to a speaker.

While it is possible to use two connections for this, a dock connection for power and a headphone connection for audio, because the Sansa has both of these in one connection, it is my understanding that virtually all car adapters designed for Sansa connect both power and audio through the dock connector.

Technically, car adapter mode is only about power sensing and relating that to turning the player on and off.  But in the Sansa, it seems to me, both power sensing and audio to the dock connector are related to car adapter use.
