See above. The current version hangs as soon as I try to access any sub menus.

And does it work with the original drive? Since you've physically modified your player, the first thing to investigate would be if that modification is bad.

Thanks Llorean.  I'll experiment with a few things, see how it goes and get back to you guys.

I just thought I'd post to see if anyone had come across it before to save me some time. It's a very weird experience to have a digital player slow the music down like someone had pulled the plug on a vinyl record player... :o

So if you are now current again, then all is well :)

As Llorean says, the mod is the first suspect.
