Playing mp3 files from external USB device on iriver H320
« on: September 08, 2009, 12:39:37 AM »
Hi,

I am a newbie to this forum. I was just wondering whether a "new" feature can be added to the rockbox software, so that it can read from the external USB device whether it is pen drive or a flash CF memory card. The reason I ask is, I have seen elsewhere in the forum, folks has changed the iriver h320 device to use a CF memory card and removed the hard disk.

I was wondering whether we can use the USB port to play a mp3 file. At the moment the USB OTG can see the file system on the original firmware (and can copy, paste etc).

It would be great if we can play the file? This can eliminate the need for opening the device and put in the CF card?

There may be hardware limitations which is preventing you folks from doing it - I am not sure.

Thanks
Vaidy

There are no hardware limitation on the H320 that prevent this - it's just that no-one has ever bothered doing it.

It's been on the "TODO" list for years, and still no-one has come forward to implement it. I guess no-one wants it badly enough they're prepared to put in the work.

To put it simply, if you want this feature badly enough, you're likely going to have to do it yourself.

Don't forget that the OTG is slow and eats battery life (I did it once to copy pictures from a camera justify to myself buying an H300...)

I still use my H300 (with Rockbox of course) for listening in the office (all my music fits on there) but I also picked up a cheap Sansa which uses micro SD cards (HC ones with Rockbox), that wasn't my reason for getting it (it was so cheap that I won't be mega disappointed about leaving it on a plane, etc) but maybe that would be an option for you?
